Strengthening Local Prevention of Opioid Deaths Through Training and Review

Michigan has made meaningful progress in reducing opioid overdose deaths. After peaking in 2021, overdose deaths have declined each year, with Michigan’s rate of decline from 2021–2023 nearly five times faster than the national average. Continued investment in prevention is making a measurable difference in saving lives.
Progress was supported by strengthening overdose and child death review efforts statewide. Training and technical assistance enabled local teams to better identify risk factors and apply findings to prevention strategies tailored to local communities.
In 2025, the program engaged 1,914 partners statewide. MPHI staff participated in nearly 200 local meetings, and 74 of Michigan’s 83 counties held at least one overdose and/or child death review meeting. MPHI teams also trained 240 professionals through a quarterly learning series and convened 142 participants at the annual team member training. The program’s online resources continue to support local work, with the website receiving between 1,000 and 2,000 visits each month.
