Dr. Canady on Think Tank of Three Podcast

Dr. Renée Branch Canady, CEO of the MPHI, recently appeared on an episode of the Think Tank of Three podcast, hosted by Reischea Canidate-Kapasouris and Julie Holton. The episode focused on the topic of “Breaking Barriers in Healthcare Equity.” Dr. Canady was invited to share her experiences as a leader in the fight against public health inequities, examining multiple topics covered in her recently published book “Room at the Table.”

Here are some key takeaways from the episode:

  • Systemic racial disparities in healthcare: Historically, minority communities have experienced inequities in healthcare. Dr. Canady discussed these inequities and the disparities faced by different races. Though progress has been made, there are still inequities to be addressed and improvements to be made.
  • Beginning a dialogue: Canady stated that “dialogue is action.” Misunderstandings and systemic disparities are fueled by ignorance. By beginning a dialogue, we can begin to identify ignorance about racial equity and work to combat inequities. Dr. Canady asserted that despite the difficulty of conversations, we must learn to give each other grace.
  • Progress through listening and learning: Canady shared examples of the MPHI’s efforts to improve the lives of Michigan residents during the pandemic. Through these experiences, we learn that listening is a powerful tool for change.
  • Differences should not be ignored: Our differences affect the ways we grow, age, live, and experience healthcare. Rather than ignoring differences, we should acknowledge and address them. Only when we acknowledge differences can we move toward equity in public health and beyond.

These concepts and more are found in Dr. Canady’s new book, “Room at the Table.” Learn more here:
