MPHI CEO Dr. Renée Branch Canady was recently interviewed on WILX’s Studio 10. The segment titled “Ask the Author” delves into Dr. Canady’s book, “Room at the Table.” Dr. Canady shares some of the insights covered in the book, and her goals for creating the book. She explains how all people are leaders and can influence change in the communities around them.

“We’re all responsible for our health, for the wellbeing of our community, and I just happen to think that we’re all leaders,” Dr. Canady said. “It’s not about a title, it’s about the relationships you have and the influence you deploy.”

Here are a few key takeaways from the interview:

  • The Act of “Leadering”: We are all leaders, and it is important to use that leadership to improve our communities. Dr. Canady emphasizes that leadership not only encompasses who we are, but what we are doing. The act of “leadering” is an ongoing process in contributing to those around us, furthering relationships and the community as a whole.
  • The “Excuse Me But” Phenomenon: Though we may feel compelled to shut down when we hear something we don’t agree with or feel is unjust, it is important to speak up instead. Dr. Canady identifies these moments as a call to action; an opportunity to respectfully speak up and open a productive dialogue.
  • Dialogue That Drives Change: Dr. Canady asserts that dialogue is action. This form of dialogue goes beyond casual conversation and is instead a discussion that seeks to improve a situation and generate solutions to problems.
